Professor Zhang initiated his medical career at the Department of Medicine in the Bethune Medical University between 1978 and 1982. He pursued his Master's degree in 1985 and commenced his Ph.D. in Otolaryngology at the same University in 1986. From 1989 to 1990, he served as a Resident Physician in the Department of Otolaryngology at the First Clinical College of the Bethune Medical University. Subsequently, he was a Visiting Researcher at Tohoku University in Japan between 1990 and 1994. In 1994, Professor Zhang became an Associate Professor, and later in 1997, a Professor and Chief Physician in the Department of Otolaryngology at the Third Clinical College of the Bethune Medical University. From 1998 to 2001, he held the position of Professor and Chief Physician in the Department of Otolaryngology at Beijing Hospital, Ministry of Health. Currently, Professor Zhang is Chief Physician, Professor, Department Director and Head of the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Skull Base Surgery Center, and Neurosurgery Ward at Xuanwu Hospital, the Capital Medical University.

In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Professor Zhang is Editorial Member in several journals, including the Chinese Journal of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, the Chinese Journal of Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery, the Chinese Journal of Otolaryngology and Skull Base Surgery, and the Chinese Journal of Hearing and Speech Rehabilitation Sciences. He was appointed as a Member of the expert group for senior professional title evaluation of the Ministry of Health when the Ministry introduced a large-scale medical equipment expert group. Professor Zhang is a Member of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National and Beijing Medical Malpractice Appraisal Committee. He also serves as a jury member of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. Furthermore, Professor Zhang holds the position of Vice President of the Otolaryngology Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association and is the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Journal of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.
