In July 2004, Professor Tao became a member of the Head and Neck Surgical Department of Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University. He is an experienced and well-trained surgeon in the field of ENT & head and neck surgery. 

Professor Tao is mainly engaged in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck. He is good at salivary gland surgery, thyroid surgery, laryngeal microsurgery, the laryngeal function preserving operation and microsurgery reconstruction after head and neck surgery, especially endoscopic minimally invasive surgery and da Vinci robotic surgery. 

In basic research, he focuses on the immune microenvironment of head and neck tumors and related immunotherapy. He is also interested in clinical trials of head and neck tumors and basic research based on the results of these trials. 

In addition to being busy with surgical practice and basic research, Professor Tao also actively participates in clinical teaching and training young head and neck surgeons.
